People across the country will celebrate Thanksgiving this week, and many may choose to deep fry their turkey.

But deep fryers can be dangerous.

Firefighters say these appliances must be managed properly to stay safe.

"The instability of the three legs that are on them, the temperature, the oil, adding in the turkey, in regards to it not being dry or being thawed correctly, can really overflow or seriously burn somebody," warns Charlotte County, Florida, Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Larry Lippell.

To properly fry a turkey the bird should always be thawed, the oil should not be hotter than 350 degrees and the fryer should not be overfilled.

Otherwise, oil from the fryer can overflow, sparking a fire that can't be easily extinguished.
