Washington (AP) John McCain maintains Barack Obama is wrong about the Iraq war.
Obama's campaign says McCain is trying to talk around a flubbed statement about the war.
McCain tells CBS the surge helped a Sunni revolt succeed against the terror group, Al-Qaida in Iraq. But Obama's campaign quickly noted that the so-called Anbar “awakening” started before President Bush announced the troop buildup. That led a McCain spokesman to say the surge improved the security situation in Anbar
And to accuse democrats of what he calls “a transparent effort to minimize the role of our commanders and our troops in defeating the enemy.”
Earlier this year McCain mistakenly said Iran, a Shiite country, was allowing Al-Qaida fighters, who are typically Sunni, to train there before returning to Iraq.
