GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) -- State Senator Steve King says he plans to run for Mesa County Sheriff in 2014 putting State politics aside and shifting his focus to the safety and security of Mesa County.

King was first elected as a State Representative and then State Senator is hoping to continue his public service as Sheriff.

King says he's looking to continue the legacy of the previous two Sheriff's but understands there are modern day challenges across the County. “We've seen a decline in revenue coming in, and that always presents it’s own type of challenges to continue to provide good quality services,” says King.
King formally announced the run at Home Loan State Bank downtown on Thursday night. He now has ten days to file his paperwork with the elections office.

John Pennington, also a Republican, has submitted paperwork to the Mesa County Elections Office stating his intention to run for the position as well.

Current Sheriff Stan Hilkey is term limited. The election is 16 months away, in November of 2014.
