MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO) -- The effort to recall Montrose County Commissioner Gary Ellis has fallen short.

Wednesday, the Montrose County Clerk and Recorder's Office announced the petition to recall Ellis did not receive the 3,012 valid signatures needed to move forward with a recall election.

Petitioners submitted nearly 3,200 signatures, but the clerk's office only validated 2,689 of them.

County elections officials say in order for a signature to be valid, the person must be a registered voter in Montrose County and the address they provided on the petition must match the address in the clerk's records.

The effort to oust Ellis and Commissioners David White and Ron Henderson was spearheaded by two Montrose Memorial Hospital employees named Mike Krull and Duke Richardson.

Ellis has said he believes the petition was started in response to the county's suit against the hospital. Krull and Richardson say that's not the case and they launched their effort because the commissioners had mismanaged county funds.

Only a petition for Ellis was ultimately submitted to the Clerk and Recorder's Office.

"I believe the best thing for our County is put this recall to rest and leave it behind us," said Ellis. "We have many important issues that need to be focused on. I understand the recall group can challenge the matter, but I sincerely hope they take this opportunity to let both sides get back to resolving pressing issues and let the county heal."
