1 arrested at Columbus Day ceremony in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) -- Police have arrested a man accused of disorderly conduct at the 107th annual Columbus Day wreath-laying ceremony in Pueblo.

The Pueblo Chieftain says the man was arrested after the ceremony Monday while protesters were waiting behind a barricade to get to the Christopher Columbus statue downtown. The newspaper reports the man was seen rattling the barricade fence.

Police Chief Luis Velez tells us the man was taken to the police station where he was to be issued a citation. His name wasn't immediately released.

The Chieftain reports about 175 people attended the ceremony, and about 150 protesters were on hand.

Columbus Day has been a day of celebration for some Italian Americans, but protesters say the day honors a man who ushered in centuries of oppression of Native Americans.
