Denver (AP) A judge has ordered the removal of 18th Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers in the upcoming death penalty trial of an inmate accused of killing another prisoner.
Lincoln County District Judge Stanley A. Brinkley said in an order issued Monday that chambers' office has several conflicts in the case, including how she is being reimbursed by the state through the Department of Corrections for prosecution costs. Brinkley says a special prosecutor must be appointed to ensure 30-year-old Alejandro Perez has a fair trial.
Perez is a co-defendant of David Bueno, whose death-penalty case is already being deliberated by jurors. Both are charged in the 2004 stabbing death of 40-year-old Jeffrey Heird at the Limon correctional facility.
