Puppies found abandoned in a trash can have been nursed back to health. People had the chance to adopt them over the weekend.

The puppies were just a few days old when someone dumped them in a trash can at a park in Highland Ranch. The puppies were placed in foster care and bottle-fed. They are now nine weeks old, and according to a veterinarian with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, they are in excellent health.

The humane society held a special streamlined adoption drawing on Saturday to place them with families. 11 News talked with the Kalter family, who said they were outraged when they heard what happened to these puppies.

"It was horrible, any dog lover, well hopefully any human person with any decency would think it was a horrible thing to do. It's always heartbreaking to hear that someone would do that,” Aly Kalter said.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region received more than sixty applications from families all over the state.

The Douglas County Animal Law Enforcement Agency is currently investigating this case. If you know anything about this call the Douglas County Crime Stoppers at 719-913-STOP.
