WOODLAND PARK, Colo. (AP) A soldier in Fort Carson's Green Berets is accused of assaulting his elderly mother-in-law in a wheelchair.

The Gazette reports that police were called to the Woodland Park home of 53-year-old Command Sgt. Major Jerry Lentz Lambert on Saturday.

Lambert faces charges of a crime against an at-risk person, third-degree assault and child abuse. The child abuse charges stem from the fact that police say children were home and witnessed the apparent attack.

The 10th Special Forces Group confirmed that Lambert works in the unit, which is known as the Green Berets. Command sergeant major is the highest enlisted rank in the Army.

Lambert is free on bond.
