Golden, Colo. (AP) A Lakewood woman who prosecutors say gave birth to a baby in a toilet and allowed the baby to drown has been sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Thirty-one-year-old Cheri Marie Kostur was arrested last year after she prematurely delivered the 3-pound girl in her home in Lakewood.
Police said Kostur told officers she had smoked methamphetamine before the birth.
Kostur pleaded guilty to possessing and using methamphetamine and to child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. She was sentenced Tuesday.
A pathologist trial testified at trial that the baby was born alive and took a breath before she drowned. According to court testimony, Kostur told a doctor she had heard the baby cry.
