FRUITA, Colo. The Fruita Police Department police K9 Talu received a ballistic vest, thanks to the nationwide Groupon event that received over $335,000.

Vested Interest in K-9's Inc. provided the vest for Talu, as a result of the "Occasions" campaign for Groupon Grassroots to outfit police K9's with bullet and stab protective vests. This is the third year in a row Vested Interest in K-9's has been selected by Groupon to outfit police dogs with ballistic vests, and the campaign will be providing more than 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with the vests.

Officials say there are different aspects of the program where some dogs will be memory of a particular dog. Talu's vest is in memory of K9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. Rocco sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January of 2014.

The Fruita Police K9 Talu is a four and half year old German Shepard who recently received the 2013 Colorado Police Canine Association Award after locating 10 pounds of methamphetamine in concealed compartments of a vehicle.
