GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. State Senator Steve King, who won the Republican primary for Mesa County Sheriff, is under a criminal investigation for falsifying a timecard.

King is term-limited and is running for sheriff in his home county of Mesa.

A spokeswoman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation says Assistant District Attorney Mark Hulbert of Arapahoe County will investigate the allegation against King.

Former Sheriff Stan Hilkey's new position is with the CBI as the new Colorado Department of Public Safety Executive Director. Hilkey originally fired King on June 6th. The CBI says it is now a conflict of interest if they were to continue to investigate.

The CBI says Hulbert has no geographical or professional link to King.

Last month, interim Mesa County Sheriff Rebecca Speiss asked the CBI to investigate King.

King has said the time-card error was a mistake and that he has apologized.
