Denver (AP) Colorado's oldest operating cemetery is getting a facelift.
And the first stop in the restoration of Riverside Cemetery in Denver is the restored statue of a Colorado National Guardsman.
The restored zinc statue of George Wise was placed once again in the cemetery Sunday. It was a long-overdue restoration for the 120-year-old statue placed by the territorial daughters of Colorado.
Volunteers say there are more restoration plans in the works for riverside. The Denver post reports that the cemetery's endowment is too small to cover even basic watering and grave maintenance costs. The cemetery is the resting place for three territorial governors
And some 1,000 veterans dating to the Civil War.
