Telluride, Colo. (AP) More than a third of the federal land available for oil and gas leases in Colorado next February is in San Miguel County, and the size of the offering has a county official alarmed.
The Bureau of Land Management will auction off mineral leases on more than 133,000 acres statewide on Feb. 12, including more than 48,000 in the southwestern Colorado county.
Most of that land is managed by the U.S. Forest Service but the BLM acts as the leasing agent.
County Commissioner Joan May says much of the land is in sensitive areas, including important wildlife habitat and land near wilderness areas.
The county commissioners plan to meet with forest service officials about the sale on Jan. 6.
