Nederland, Colo. (AP) Authorities say a lift operator at the Eldora Ski Resort shouted something about religion before fatally shooting Eldora general manager Brian Mahon Tuesday morning.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office says the employee then fled the ski area and was shot and killed by a deputy.

The coroner’s office identified the employee as 24-year-old Derik a. Bonestroo of Nederland. The sheriff’s office says Bonestroo entered the locker room of the resort’s “pump house,” where other employees where attending a routine meeting, shortly after 7 this morning. He fired a shot into the ceiling and yelled something about religion.

Detective Cmdr. Phil West of the sheriff’s office says the 49-year-old Mahon heard the gunshot, walked into the room and was shot twice. He died at the scene.

Authorities say Bonestroo fled, was chased down by a Sheriff’s Deputy and was killed in a fire fight a few miles away on the peak-to-peak highway, south of Nederland.
