Durango (AP) - The New Mexico Department of Transportation is looking into an accident that occurred when a tire came loose from a trailer and smashed through a vehicle's windshield, killing a Durango man.
Transportation officials want to determine whether the trailer met state standards for a commercial vehicle. The 30-foot long, eight-wheeled trailer was hauling a John Deere backhoe.
Ron Newton, 44, killed about 1 p.m. Friday when two tires came off a southbound trailer on U.S. 550, north of Aztec, N.M. one tire jumped a divider and crashed though the windshield of the northbound BMW sport utility vehicle in which Newton was riding.
Ronnie Jacquez, 34, of Bloomfield, N.M. was hauling the trailer.
No charges have been filed.
