Airport officials in Eagle County are hoping an expanded runway will expand tourism in the area.

The Eagle County Airport is expanding the runway by 1,000 feet to accommodate bigger commercial flights.

While the 22 million dollar expansion project takes place the airport will be closed.

Eagle County Manager Keith Montag says the airport hopes it will get more visitors from as far as New York City in the summer.

The Federal Aviation Administration is paying for 95 percent of project, expected to be complete by September.
