Sunnyside, Utah (AP) - State wildlife officials say a black bear attacked a 78-year-old man during a rafting trip in eastern Utah.
The Division of Wildlife resources says the 78-year-old man had puncture wounds in his torso and right arm and his other arm was scratched in the attack around 12:30 a.m. Friday. They say he was flown to a hospital and listed in stable condition.
The DWR says the man was sleeping at a campsite in Carbon County when the bear attacked. Members of the rafting group say the bear had shown up earlier in the night, but ran off after somebody fired a warning shot.
A DWR spokesman says the man's grandson shot the bear after the attack. The animal ran off, but its body was found later Friday morning.
