PowWow in Delta this weekend

A cultural powwow is taking place in Delta this weekend.

Everyone's invited to the 15th Annual Council Tree PowWow and Cultural Festival Sept. 18 - 20 in Delta.

Among the activities, an Outdoor American Indian Market where you can buy quality hand-made items from 50 of the best American Indian Artisans. On display: jewelry, paintings, potter, clothing and kachinas. Visitors will also enjoy authentic American Indian Fry Bread, Indian Tacos, Mutton Stew and other traditional favorites. Market hours are 9/18-19 from 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. and 9/20 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Schedule of Council Tree PowWow events:
Sept. 18:
Celebration of Ute Nation Day, special Ute Cultural Presentations
5:30 p.m. Gourd Dancing
7:30 p.m. Grand Entry, Contest Dancing and Drum Contest

Sept. 19:
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Adult Cultural Center: The Ute tribes will feature a series of how-to sessions: basket making and beading. All cultural experiences are included in admission price
11:30 a.m. Gourd Dancing
1 p.m. Grand Entry
2 - 4 p.m. Children Cultural Center: Ute Artisans teach children to make traditional American Indian items.
2 p.m. Hand Games @ Lion's Pavilion: Bring your chair and settle in for a very old traditional Ute game. This is a game of skill, using game pieces and scarves while the Ute players sing and drum. This tournament is a double-elimination event.
5:30 p.m. Gourd Dancing
7 p.m. Grand Entry, Gourd Dancing, Drum Contest

Sept. 20:
7 a.m. Lion's Club Breakfast and Gourd Dancing
11 a.m. Fry Bread Making Class ($5 fee)
12 p.m. Grand Entry, Contest Dancing, Drum Contest and Awards
12:30 p.m. Fry Bread Eating Contest
2 p.m. Watermelon Eating Contest

Don't miss the Tipi Village with storytelling and tipi etiquette.

Tickets are $7/day for adults and $6/day for seniors or $15 for a 3-day pass. Kids 7 - 12 are $3/day, kids under 7 are free. Parking is $2.

Organizers ask everyone to leave their dogs and alcohol at home but do encourage you to bring a lawn chair. The PowWow happens in Confluence Park in Delta.
