GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The man accused in the death of his girlfriend whose body was found dumped at the foot of the Colorado National Monument is formally charged Tuesday.

David Norman now faces additional charges after his appearance in Mesa County court. The District Attorney filed four habitual criminal counts on top of the charges Norman was already facing in the death of Kathy Fortner, 49. Norman originally faced just second degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and false reporting.

Fortner's body was found in early July by a group of tourists. Norman was taken into custody the night her body was found on a parole hold. He was officially named the suspect in her death on July 19.

According to an arrest affidavit he was spotted on surveillence video near the Monument and at a car wash paying special attention to the bed of his truck where authorities say they found Fortner's blood.
