AURORA, Colo. (AP) -- Aurora police say an officer suffered a head injury when a driver suspected of shoplifting sped off trying to flee authorities.

Police say two officers had stopped the car after receiving a call Friday afternoon about shoplifting at a Best Buy. Authorities say one of the officers was standing by the suspect's open passenger-side door when the car drove off, causing the officer to fall and hit his head on the pavement. The officer fired one shot.

When officers detained the suspect again, they saw he had a gunshot wound on his leg.

Police say the officer was hospitalized but his injury is not life-threatening. The suspect, 26-year-old Jonathan Steele, was taken to a hospital, but is now in jail on $50,000 bail. He faces charges of assault and vehicular eluding causing injury.
