DENVER (AP) -- Gov. John Hickenlooper is asking Coloradans to observe a moment of silence on Friday to remember the 26 people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Hickenlooper and governors across the country are calling for the moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. in local time zones -- the hour of the shooting last Friday in Connecticut.

Hickenlooper also urged government buildings and places of worship to ring bells 26 times in honor of those who died at the school.

Funerals set for 5 students, teacher shot in Conn.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) -- More funerals and a memorial service are scheduled to be held in Connecticut and New York for students and teachers killed by a gunman at an elementary school.

Funerals are scheduled Thursday in Connecticut for 7-year-old Grace McDonnell and 6-year-olds Benjamin Andrew Wheeler, Catherine Violet Hubbard, Jesse Lewis and Allison Wyatt.

A funeral will be held Thursday morning in Katonah, N.Y., for teacher Anne Marie Murphy.

A memorial service has been scheduled for teacher Lauren Gabrielle Rousseau.

In addition, the families of 6-year-old Olivia Rose Engel, behavioral therapist Rachel Marie D'Avino and school psychologist Mary Sherlach have calling hours Thursday.

At least nine funerals and wakes were held Wednesday, and more are planned.

In Washington, Vice President Joe Biden meets today with law enforcement officials across the country.

President Barack Obama has given Biden the task of coming up with recommendations on new gun laws in the wake of last week's school massacre. Obama also is pressing lawmakers to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons.
