CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) -- A 38-year-old Cortez woman accused of stabbing a man to death with a kitchen knife has been formally charged with first-degree murder.
The Cortez Journal reports (http://bit.ly/17bYPBL) Valerie Espinoza appeared in court Wednesday for the Sept. 19 death of 62-year-old Charles Chaves. Espinoza, who is being held without bail, faces life in prison if convicted.
Court records say Chaves was stabbed seven times in his upper body during the early-morning attack. A roommate who discovered the man lying on a bed "gasping for air" says he recovered a bloody butcher knife from Espinoza before she left the scene.
