Delta egg farms proposal ruffles feathers

DELTA, Colo (KKCO) One of the egg-laying facilities is already operational in Powell Mesa, with about 15,000 cage-free hens. The other facility is proposed for Redlands Mesa. Facility owner Edwin Hostetler declined to comment.

Reports say the hearing is the result of a judge's decision that found an "abuse of discretion" in county commissioners' approval of the facilities.

The judge sent the case back to commissioners, saying there needs to be additional findings on whether the operations are compatible with the neighborhood, effects on property values, whether environmental concerns have been addressed, and whether county staff can monitor and enforce the conditions of approval.

This operation is located in a small acreage residential area. Yes, there is a lot of open unused space in Delta county and this industrial operation should have been sited where there are no residences. Who wants this in their back yard? There is a balance between needing commercial operations and the need to protect existing landowners. That is why there needs to be zoning laws and intelligent review of proposals such as this one.

The "neighborhood" is out in the middle of nowhere (Delta is full of nowhere) and if the BOCC refuses to endorse agricultural business in Deltaville, what the heck is left there to raise tax money? My wife works for the county and hasn't had a raise (not 5 cents) in five years! The Republicrats that live up there must think that dollars fall from the heavens to fund the county government!!! Wise up you meatheads!!!!
