DENVER (AP) -- A man suspected of killing a woman and wounding another is in critical condition after he fired a gunshot at a propane tank and was shot by police in Denver.

The man was seen walking with a gun and propane tanks in a residential neighborhood Friday after a shooting was reported in a home. That prompted police to warn residents to remain indoors.

Within about a half hour, officers responded and shot him. Police Chief Robert White says officers fired after the man shot at one of the tanks, which had gunpowder on top. White says it activated but no one was hurt in the explosion.

White says the man had two or three such tanks.

A woman was found dead in one home, and another woman was found wounded in another.
