DENVER (AP) -- Denver police are investigating reports that a deputy sheriff has been wounded near the downtown area.

The Denver Police Department says that two sheriff's deputies were serving an arrest warrant at a home when a woman came to the door with a gun. She shot one deputy in the hand, and the other deputy returned fire.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say the officer who was shot is in fair-condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Two children were also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure since they were near the scene.
