Fire destroys half of a duplex, smoke damages other half

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Heavy smoke and large flames filled the night sky as a fire destroys one side of a duplex.

The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. in the 400 block of 22nd Street Friday morning.

Flames were visible when crews arrived on scene, and there was a lot of smoke.

The Grand Junction Police Department evacuated four nearby apartments as crews put out the flames.

A woman was inside the duplex when the fire started. She woke up to the smell of smoke and was able to get out and call 911.

The side of the duplex where the fire started is severely damaged, the other side, which was unoccupied, has smoke damage. No word on what started the fire.
