CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) -- Firefighters are battling at least three significant wildfires in Colorado amid gusty winds and record-breaking hot, dry weather.
The Bureau of Land Management says a fire burning on an estimated 200 acres south of the Royal Gorge Bridge and Arkansas River has evacuated the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park near Canon City. Park spokeswoman Peggy Gair tells The Gazette (http://bit.ly/13z4AVJ) the evacuations affected several hundred people at the park. The BLM says the fire is spotting on the north side of the river.
Meanwhile the Red Cross says it's opening a shelter for evacuees from a 15-acre fire in the Black Forest area northeast of Colorado Springs.
In northern Colorado, a wildfire sparked by lightning Monday in Rocky Mountain National Park is growing and sending out large plumes of smoke.
