Firefighters run for honor, charity
The Blue Star Mothers and area firefighters teamed up to hold the Tunnel to Towers Race in Grand Junction for the second year.
The race is in remembrance of the Sept. 11 attacks. It also raised money for severely disabled veterans. The run originally started in New York City for one special hero.
"A little bit of history of the race: Steven Siller was a New York City firefighter on 9/11. He got off duty that morning, and he was going into the Brooklyn side of the tunnel when the towers were hit," said Gareth Parks, a Grand Junction firefighter.
While Steven Siller was off-duty and heard news of the attack, he rushed to help. After he found the tunnels were closed, he ran to the towers with sixty pounds of gear. Siller died later that day.
Now he is remembered and celebrated through the Tunnel to Towers Race nationwide.
