FRUITA, Colo (KKCO) The Alzeihmer's Association set up a booth outside, and any one who donated any amount to the Alzehimer's Association ate for free. Organizers say this event is the single biggest fundraiser that the association has, and all money raised stays within Mesa County. The Western Slope Coordinator says more people are affected by Alzheimer's than ever before as recognition and diagnosis of the disease have grown.
"We estimate that in Mesa County alone there are 1,600 people alone currently affected and for each of those people there are family care givers friends, and neighbors that are shouldering the burden of caring for those folks at home and those are all unpaid care hours," says Teresa Black, Alzheimer's Association Regional Director.
The association provides information and resources for hundreds of unpaid care givers in Mesa County. This fundraiser leads up to the Alzheimer's benefit walk happening on September 15th.
