Update: fire near Whitewater is contained

WHITEWATER, Colo (KKCO)-- The fire at the landfill off of Highway 50 was contained Saturday night, fire officials confirm.

The Grand Junction Fire Department received a call about a fire at the landfill at 8:22 Saturday evening.

The landfill is located at 3061 Highway 50.

Initial calls said the fire was about an acre in size. Our crew on scene says both the Grand Junction and Land's End Fire Departments were called to the blaze.

Authorities believe the fire was started by lightning. They currently have other heavy equipment on the way to help fight the fire. We'll continue to update you as more information becomes available.
