GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) But eight months later, prices vary widely across the state. A recent investigation reveals the cost for the generic version, called Atorvistatin can vary up to $100 a month.
In Grand Junction, the generic version sells anywhere from a little over $15 at independent stores like Palisade Pharmacy to $103 at Walgreens.

"We base our costs on our medicines at Palisade Pharmacy on the costs of the medication. A lot of chains use the average wholesale price to come up with the price of the medicine, which is higher than the actual cost of the medicine, and they use that in their formula; and that's why we have lower prices," says Tony Aiello, a pharmacist with Palisade Pharmacy.

Experts believe the conflicting prices will be around for awhile because there's not enough competition yet among drug companies.
They say costs may not go down and stabilize statewide for another six months or more.
