GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) -- Police say a 65-year-old man from Golden who is charged in the death of his wife tried to kill himself after the strangling by staying outside in the mountains for three nights in hopes of freezing to death.
David Wayne Reathman is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 70-year-old Barbara Reathman.
Police doing a welfare check March 25 found the woman's body in the couple's home, but David Reathman was missing. He later turned himself in.
Investigators say he told them he began to believe murder-suicide was the only way to escape the couple's financial problems caused by a gambling addiction. David Reathman also is accused of exaggerating the severity of his cancer prognosis in an attempt to get his stepdaughter to help him commit suicide.
