Art Cook has spent the last 55 years working with the Mesa County Seach and Rescue team to save lost outdoor enthusiasts.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Mesa County search and rescue team goes out on hundreds of calls every year to help locate and rescue lost or injured hikers, bikers, and other outdoor sportsmen and women.

Art Cook has worked with the team for 55 years and last week he was honored with an achievement award.

He started with the dive and swim team in 1958 and helped form the official Mesa County S.A.R.C. in 1966.

The team is now comprised of more than 200 volunteers who spend hours training every week and month to prepare for rescues in any terrain or weather.

Cook said he feels it's his responsibility to give back to his hometown.

"It's a give back, the way I look," says Cook. "I was raised here in the valley and I retired from US West 32 years with Mountain bail and I've done a lot of work in the mountains and it's just a giveback."
