DENVER (AP) -- A 34-year-old man accused of shooting a Westminster police officer during a routine traffic stop has been sentenced to 96 years in prison.

The Denver Post reports ( Larry Lynn Gomez was sentenced Friday for shooting Derek Rogers last November. About 50 police officers attended the hearing.

Prosecutors say Gomez leaned out of his car during the traffic stop, shot the officer and sped away. Rogers did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Gomez, who was convicted in September of attempted murder of a police officer and first-degree assault, also is accused of shooting at Denver police officers during a traffic stop the night before Rogers pulled him over.
