ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- Authorities say a 56-year-old man was killed when he crashed into a tree while skiing at Aspen Mountain.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office says Jonathan Stuart of Aspen was found unconscious and tangled up in trees near the intermediate Bellissimo run at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Ski patrollers began CPR, but Stuart was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aspen Skiing Co. spokesman Jeff Hanle says Stuart, who was wearing a helmet, was on the run for about 20 minutes before he was found. He was skiing with friends who had been waiting for him at the base of the gondola.

Longtime friend Brent Gardner-Smith tells the Aspen Daily News that Stuart as "one of the warmest, nicest guys." He says he was married and had two children.
