A ceremony to honor our local heroes was held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery Sunday afternoon.
Members of the Western Slope Honor Flight dedicated the new World War Two memorial. It's located at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.
The statue was designed by Carlson memorials to pay tribute to those who fought selflessly for our country, and it's meant to stand the test of time.
"Well, this is long overdue recognition. It took years 59 years for the WWII Veterans to be remembered with a monument of their own in Washington D.C., and it took a few more years here, but finally we've got a monument," said Kevin Woodlinger, master of ceremonies.
The ceremony was a culmination and celebration of the Western Slope Honor Flight's efforts to send 530 local WWII Vets to Washington D.C. so they could visit the memorial erected in their honor. Sunday also recognized the 67th anniversary of the ending of World War II.
