Palisade, Colo. (KKCO) --- In a proposal to Xcel Energy, Palisade officials requested the use of an abandoned power plant site for a new shooting complex.
Mayor Roger Granat says that he believes the complex will serve as a new gateway to the Grand Valley and will bring in additional revenue to the Western Slope. He says that events at the complex could draw hundreds of people.
"There’s no way that the town of Palisade can accommodate all of those people," says Granat. "So they’re going to spill over into Grand Junction, into Fruita..."
Xcel has teamed up with the Grand Junction Economic Partnership to help decide what the best long-term use of the land will be after they are done with the decommissioning process.
GJEP officials say that the proposal is still under review and that it will not be a short process.
While the economic benefits are a big draw for many, Granat says that the new comlex would provide an alternative to recreational shooting in more dangerous, public areas.
"Safety is utmost and this is a place where we can have a place to do that, in a safe manner," says Granat.
