SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Police have arrested a 59-year-old woman and her adult son on 101 counts of animal cruelty after finding three dead horses and a dozen more near death on the family's ranch in Spanish Fork.
Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon says deputies went to the Smokey Mountain Ranch with a veterinarian last week after getting a tip.
They found three horses buried in a shallow grave and 12 horses severely malnourished. Cannon says two more horses have died on the ranch Since that visit.
Deputies arrested Trudy Childs and her 31-year-old son Rory Childs. They face 31 counts of livestock at large in addition to animal cruelty.
This is Rory Childs' first arrest, but his mother has been previously charged with more than 400 counts of livestock at large.
