GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) Eight words put Grand Junction into the spotlight.
"We just said Air Force One has landed in Grand Junction, and that just went off like wildfire," said Mistalynn Meyeraan, marketing and public relations coordinator with the Grand Junction Visitors and Convention Bureau (VCB).
The bureau reports the picture of Air Force One on their Facebook page had the most hits ever in a single day.
"It's about general buzz, and it's not political sides; it's why is Grand Junction a hot seat for the politics right now, and so that creates interest in the area and awareness for Grand Junction just in general," said Meyeraan.
The picture directed web traffic to the VCB website, which had 1,200 hits, and 4,000 page views in a single day, a 10% increase over last year.
"People were staying a little bit longer and looking through the site a little bit longer than they had last year," Meyeraan said.
The Facebook page had 100 likes and 15 shares in a single day.
"We're fairly new to social media at the VCB, only about a year in, and that's really big for us," she said.
The VCB's success highlights an increase in the number of local businesses and non-profits using social media.
"They're using it to inform the consumer on what they do, their businesses like to really gain that trust of a consumer before they even walk through the doors," said Angela Wetzel, Owner/Marketing Specialist at Essential Marketing in Grand Junction.
Wetzel said businesses are also using social media to promote special deals: "specifically with like Facebook, using check in deals; so when people check-in, all their friends see that they're at that business; it's just a domino effect, where people see it, they go and like the page, because they want to know what deals they can get as well."
And although people who visit the VCB''s page might not move here, they could visit, and hopefully our area will grow on them.
"Right now it's just generating interest in our area, and we want them to come visit, and we want them to move here, and open up businesses; hopefully the trickle effect will happen one can hope," said Meyeraan.
According to Marketwatch.com, nearly 60% of people who use Facebook for business purposes get on Facebook daily.
