EVANS, Colo. (AP) -- A proposal to create a new state in northern Colorado is running into some opposition in the most populated part of Weld County.

People turning out for meetings across the county recently have been mostly supportive, but about half of the dozens of people at Tuesday night's meeting in Evans thought it was a bad idea.

Greeley business owner Linde Thompson thought secession would provide fodder to late-night comics. Others asked for more dialogue rather than starting a new state.

Weld County commissioners have proposed Weld and several other mainly northeastern Colorado counties form a new state, North Colorado, because they say state legislators have been ignoring the needs of rural communities.

The commissioners' final meeting is scheduled Wednesday evening in Ault.
