Staying safe while traveling during the winter

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) Believe it or not winter is only two months away and it's time to start preparing now before winter weather strikes.

We all travel in one way or another, whether it be across town or across the mountains. That is why it is so important that you make sure you winterize your car or truck before it's too late.

There is the obvious maintenance; such as: checking the tread on your tires, checking windshield wipers, and making sure fluids are properly maintained.

But there is so much more that needs to be done.

A well equipped vehicle for winter has tire chains, tow rope, a shovel, tool kit, windshield scraper and brush, battery cables, extra batteries, flashlight and an all-around first-aid kit. It never hurts to have a blanket and some water-proof matches in the back either.

If for some reason you become stranded, make sure you stay with your vehicle and don't panic. Run the car every hour for about ten minutes to keep warm but keep windows cracked to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. Also check the exhaust pipe to make sure it is not being blocked for any reason. Put brightly colored and reflective fabrics on the exterior of your vehicle to enhance visibility to others.

Most importantly, stay aware by checking local forecasts on our webpage or social media sites. The best way to stay safe is avoiding bad weather all together.
