GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Mike Krueger is back to work this fall not only preparing Palisade's sporting events, but also diagramming a new method for classifying Colorado high schools in regards to athletics..

KKCO 11 Sports learned in March of 2012 that CHSAA created a committee that will investigate methods of re-classifying the state's high schools in order to achieve a better athletic balance.

Krueger, Palisade High's Athletic Director, is a Western Slope representative on that committee and he says that the group is reviewing different formulas to create the new 'classes.'

Each formula, Krueger says, weighs certain cultural aspect - such as a school's athletic participation, socio-economic status, or geography - and, therefore, should give the state a more equitable playing field.

As we head into the 2012-13 school year, Krueger says the re-classification committee hopes to agree on a formula by November and they will present it to the CHSAA Legislation board in January of 2013.

Krueger said that one idea that has been passed around the group is adding another classification to the system that already exists - a 6A class. The additional class would be utilized for all high school sports, not just one.
