Slim pickings ahead for pumpkin patches

It may be slim pickings at pumpkin patches this fall.

Dry, hot weather has hurt the annual crop across the country.

That means you can expect pumpkins to be in short supply and cost more this fall season

At corn crib nursery in Coal Valley, Illinois, extreme weather nearly wiped out their entire homegrown crop.

Owners of the nursery say that could cause prices to jump up to 30 percent.

Another owner of nearby country corner in Alpha, Illinois, says he's keeping pumpkin prices at 2011 levels.

Owner Bruce Curry battled drought with special seeds, drip irrigation and constant care for his 15 varieties of pumpkins.

While drought drives up the cost of growing pumpkins, it will likely cut into sellers.

    This is the first time I have tried growing pumkins and they grew well. My grand children will have a blast carving them.

Halloween Safety Tips

Before your ghosts and goblins trick or treat this year, parents should keep in mind some safety tips.
  • Carry a Flashlight ~ A glow bracelet, necklace, or flashing attire also work well for visibility.
  • Plan Route in Advance ~ Trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods or areas.
  • Only Visit Lit Houses ~ Residents who do not wish to be bothered by trick or treaters often leave off their lights.
  • Accompany Your Children ~ If they are older and trick or treat without an adult, set firm rules and have them carry a cell phone.
  • Think Practical for Costumes ~ Be sure a child's mask allows full visibility and breathing.
  • Inspect All Candy ~ Never allow children to eat candy before it is inspected and throw away anything that is opened.
