Durango, Colo. (AP) A New Mexico man has been sentenced to 48 years to life in prison in the brutal sexual assault on a woman who died from the attack.

Derrick Nelson Begaye of Shiprock, N.M., was convicted in March on three counts of sexual assault in the June 2007 attack on Nicole Leigh Redhorse. He was acquitted of murder.

Begaye's sentence was handed down Monday.

La Plata County Coroner Carol Huser said Redhorse bled to death from her injuries.

Harold Nakai and Carlton Lee Yazzie also face murder and sexual assault charges. They are scheduled to have separate trials this summer.

The 34-year-old Redhorse was born in Farmington, N.M., and attended high schools in Niwot, Colo., and Tucson, Ariz. She graduated from Dartmouth College.
