ELDORADO, TEXAS (AP) _ A Texas grand jury has indicted Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs and four of his followers on charges of felony sexual assault on girls under the age of 17.
One of them -- not Jeffs -- faces an additional charge of bigamy. The state's attorney general also says a sixth member of the fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is charged with three counts of failure to report child abuse.
Jeffs is already convicted of being an accomplice to rape in Utah, and he's awaiting trial in Arizona on other charges related to underage marriages.
Church member and spokesman Willie Jessop says, “we're actually quite shocked'” but that as soon ``as we know who they're looking for, we'll try to face it.'' Jessop tells the associated press: ``we believe in our innocence.'' One source says the grand jury will continue consideration of other possible criminal charges next month.
