Cortez, Colo. (AP) Authorities say counterfeit $20 and $50 bills have been showing up in southwestern Colorado this summer.

Durango police say fake bills have turned up at a fast-food restaurant and a mall since July.

Cortez police say counterfeit money showed up last week in a bank deposit, at a fast-food restaurant and at a discount store.

The Montezuma County Sheriff's Department says that in the past two weeks, a counterfeit bill was spent at a convenience store in Dolores, and another was found in the personal property of a woman who was being held at the county jail.

Cortez Police Chief Roy Lane says counterfeit bills come in spurts, probably because someone traveling through is spending them.
