MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) - Coroner's officials say a man found dead in a holding cell at the Montrose County Jail had suffered from a heart condition.
Dr. Thomas Canfield said 45-year-old Gerardo Velazquez-Velazquez also had cirrhosis of the liver and high blood pressure. He ruled that Velazquez-Velazquez died Sept. 12 of natural causes.
Velazquez-Velazquez was arrested Sept. 11 on a misdemeanor harassment charge and was placed on a mental-health hold for acute intoxication. Sheriff's officials have said his cell was checked every 15 minutes until his intoxication levels fell. He was found dead in his cell during a routine check the next afternoon.
