GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- Teachers say that Grand Junction has always had a great journalism program, so they were excited to bring home the win.

For the seniors it was their last year to compete, so it felt good knowing that they could leave on a high note.

Some students are using this experience to take their passion to the next level.

"I’m looking to do it at CSU" says Nicky Arja.

Nicky is a senior and Co-editor and Chief for the Grand Junction Newspaper. Last year was a rough one for this team so they all felt like they had something to prove.

"It’s a big deal to win awards especially with schools like Montrose that have really good competition. This has been a rebuilding year for us so it was really a big deal" says Nicky.

For teacher and mentor Rick Jussel, he is definitely excited for the win, but he is more focused on the kid’s future.

"The more important thing is a lot of these people end up going to college" says Rick.

These students put in long hours, but they also want to make sure they are having fun and taking time to enjoy the little things.

"You get to design pages and take pictures and go to sporting events and I love it" says senior Courtney Brady

As much fun as they have, students still keep their eye on the prize.

"It’s kind of a plus on our applications" says Nicky

In the newspaper category, Grand Junction placed first followed by Montrose and Montezuma-Cortez.

In the yearbook competition, Grand Junction brought home another win followed by Montrose and Palisade.

Additional awards were presented in categories ranging from sports photography, editorial writing and feature writing to yearbook photography and design.
