Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) - There is a new child diagnosed with type one diabetes, about every 20 minutes. That's why the American Diabetes Association is reaching out to parents from school district 51.
The program is called "safe at school,” the idea is to help educate parents about having a child in school with diabetes. Officials say the program is not to single out kids with diabetes but rather to help them feel normal.

Michelle McGarry, lead parent advocate for ADA, says kids and parents should have a 504 plan. A plan put in place by the federal government. She told KKCO "it's a contract where the parents and the child get to be involved in what their care needs to be. So it goes beyond their medical orders and helps them get the specifics because every kiddo with diabetes is different."

The ADA says not to wait until there is an issue with a child at school.
Be proactive and let people know what your child’s challenges are and what it takes for them to get through each day, so that teachers can support your child. However the most important thing is education, for both students and parents.
