GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) The new CMU basketball era is just beginning with their first practices of the season.
This year the men's basketball team will undergo a few changes - most notably that of a new head coach in former associate Andy Shantz.
Coach Shantz has played a role on the coaching staff for 16 seasons. When Jim Heaps announced he'd be moving into the administrative side as an assistant athletic director, Shantz was CMU's answer to step into the role of head coach
Last season the Mavs finished 18-10 overall, 14-8 in conference. They made their way into the RMAC shootout but fell short in the semifinal, losing their chance at a regional berth.
This year the Mavs are ready to take it a step further. Even though they lost nearly half their team, Coach Shantz and the returners are confident with what's to come.
"We got a new coach so it's a little bit different, a lot of new guys" said junior Michael Melillo. "We've just got to teach them how to do things and just our work ethic, and it should be pretty easy because we have a lot of great guys on this team."
"Work ethic's been great, really a tight-knit bunch already, so that's always exciting to see that the guys are getting close with one another, and that's why we've got to start practicing and sort it out and see where you're at as a group."
